The Sorrento Tour, and the whole of its peninsula, is a must-see stop for those who wish to visit our country. Since the times when “Surrentum” was a Greek colony, people already talked about its irresistible charm. In fact, it was said that mermaids lived there, worshiped in the peninsula at that time, and that with their songs they would attract sailors passing by. A charming and magic atmosphere that hasn’t faded with time. World-famous for its extraordinary position, Sorrento stands on a tuff terrace jutting out over the sea, from which one can admire the islands of Capri and Ischia, the Vesuvius and the whole of the enchanting Gulf. For its wonderful position, its mild climate, its citrus fruits and the vineyards that surround it, this place has been the favorite destination of many artists and famous European figures. But this isn’t all: a visit in Sorrento will take you back i n centuries, giving you the opportunity to live various historical phases through its monuments. The Byzantine and Norman dominations, the destruction by the Turks and the rebirth around the 18th century, when the reforms of Charles III of Spain brought a general recovery. This was the start of first forms of tourism advertised by the media of the time – painters and engravers.
Why Choose our Sorrento Tours
Quality and safety at your service
Despite the often uncontrolled building, the charm of its original core and of its monuments has remained untouched. We suggest you begin the Sorrento tour from the area between Piazza Tasso, where the famous poet was born in 1544, and Viale degli Aranci, which has remained more or less as in the Viceroy period. At the center of the Piazza is really worth seeing the beautiful Santuario di Nostra Signora del Monte Carmelo (Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mount Carmel), which dates back to 1572. Richly decorated with stuccos and inlays, it was built by the Fathers of Carmine Maggiore in Naples and it preserves the famous canvas painted by Onofrio Avellino (1710). Staying in the historical center, you can’t miss the Duomo marked by its Bell Tower, opened in its base section by arcades and adorned with bare columns. The church was redone in the 15th century but the restorations have continued cyclically, to the point that the façade was redone in 1924. The interior, in the form of a Latin cross and with three naves, is adorned with wonderful Baroque paintings. Also enchanting are the churches of S. Antonino and San Francesco d’Assisi, with its fourteenth-century cloister in which there are very recognizable Moorish influences, the Correale di Terranova Museum, which was once the eighteenth-century residence of the Correale family. Restored after the 1980 earthquake, it hosts Greek and Roman archaeological finds on the ground floor, and Medieval marbles, Venetian glass, crystals, clocks, European, Italian and Oriental china on the upper floors.
